What does ABBA’s’ stand for?
Abba’s is the Greek for father. Similar to what we would call Papa or daddy.
Why is the CoffeeHouse called Abba’s?
The youth felt that CYL Inc. was a little too formal, and they wanted to show their commitment by naming the facility, Abba’s Coffee House. (The “Father’s” CoffeeHouse just felt more appropriate.)
What is CYL?
CYL stands for Christian Youth Leaders Inc., a 501( c ) 3 non profit Pennsylvania registered corporation incorporated in 1999.
How long has CYL been active in the community?
CYL started to meet in 1994 when area youth leaders observed their youth being unaware that their friends and acquaintances were also Christians, but were attending other churches. CYL members met monthly to plan one joint activity per quarter to bring Christian youth together.
How long has CYL been involved in the CoffeeHouse?
CYL received a call from an area church in 1998 requesting help in bringing youth from the “street” into an atmosphere of acceptance and fellowship.
How many youth take advantage of the CoffeeHouse?
Our Friday night “Seeker” / Come see activity averages about 55, with lows of about 30 during the fall football season and holiday's to highs of 125 for featured bands.
Where do most of the kids come from?
Most of the young people come from Du Bois, Sykesville and Reynoldsville, but we regularly are visited by folks from Punxsutawney, Clearfield and Brockway.
How many churches support the CoffeeHouse?
CYL receives financial support from 6 area churches, and volunteers from at least 12.
What activities take place in the average week?
Sunday afternoon at 4 PM we offer a Praise and Worship band experience, where anyone who wants to learn to play or sing in a P/W band can attend. Monday we offer a young woman’s bible study, Thursday a Men's night in, and our famous “Come See” activity Friday night.
What are the future plans for Abba’s?
Abba’s will continue to offer these and similar activities as well as open concession consignment and other sales opportunities, open to the community to fund our ongoing program activities.
What do the kids think of Abba’s?
During interviews for their newsletter the youth responded that they liked the food, bands, the people that come in, the advisors, the lamps, the pool table and games. Other youth have commented that they notice improvement in their language and attitude towards other since they have been coming to Abba’s.
